Rodney Coursey has come a long way since establishing his blog, music publicity, and concert promotions brand Garden State Hip-Hop in 2009.

Beginning as an intern at a music publishing company based in New Jersey, Coursey quickly earned two additional internship opportunities at Stunt Company Inc. and Rock Ridge Music. Those experiences helped him develop his skills, leading to his first job at Effective Immediately PR. From there he moved to Big Machine Agency which enabled him to expand his portfolio, before joining WMA Agency in late 2019.

After being recognized as a pioneer of the new generation of New Jersey hip-hop by NJ.com and gaining national attention from Billboard Magazine, DJ Booth, and Hot 97, Coursey continues to manifest his dreams. He's led PR campaigns for nationally recognized figures like RiFF RAFF, Phresher, Silentó, Regina Taylor, and NBA Hall of Famer Earl "The Pearl" Monroe. He’s executed brand partnerships with Cîroc and Plush Vodka through Garden State Hip-Hop and intends to continue helping music artists build credibility within the entertainment industry.

“Last year, Asbury Lanes had Lupe Fiasco and Talib Kweli perform, and the Stone Pony had a headlining gig for Wyclef Jean, but there’s a lack of consistency. Together, Coursey and local promoters are trying to remedy this.”

Billboard Magazine

“One of the people making the push for the inclusion of hip-hop in the Asbury scene is Rodney Coursey, the founder of Garden State Hip-Hop.”

The Pop Break

“The Shore has a lot of venues, there are few that consistently book hip-hop, let alone local artists. [Coursey] blames this on long-persisting, racially-driven stigmas about hip-hop on the part of the shore’s older venue owners.”

DJ Booth

What’s the makings of a hip-hop musician from Asbury Park? Rodney Coursey, founder of the Garden State Hip-Hop, knows.”

Asbury Park Press

“Rodney Coursey, the founder of the Garden State Hip-Hop, recently called for the Jersey hip-hop community to create music that reflects the times.”

Asbury Park Press

“Coursey and his cousin, Shah Al-Amin, aim to shine a light on anyone slapped with the underground label.”
